Introduction

Decision making is the process of choosing actions that are directed towards the resolution of a problem. It can be defined as “the selection from among alternatives of a course of action; it is at the core of planning.” The decision-making process can be carried out either by individuals or by groups. Over time, several models and theories have been developed to explain how decisions are made and how they can be made more effectively.

Decision making involves selecting from a set of alternative courses of action that are expected to fulfill the objectives of a problem more satisfactorily than other options. It is an essential part of every management function. In the words of Peter F. Drucker, “Whatever a manager does, he does through decision making.” This highlights the central role decision making plays in all professional activities.

When considering teachers, it becomes clear that they are constantly engaged in decision-making activities, whether related to school management, classroom practices, or student-centered tasks. Knowingly or unknowingly, a teacher is always making decisions. Since decision making involves thinking before acting, it is inherent in every activity. This is why it is often referred to as the “essence of managing.”

No individual can function effectively without strong decision-making abilities. Some decisions are routine and repetitive, requiring minimal effort, while others are strategic decisions that demand careful analysis and systematic thinking. In the field of education, teachers are key decision makers who must take responsibility for choices that influence the growth and development of students under their guidance.

Significance of Decision Making

Decision making is important for organizational effectiveness because of its central role in directing and controlling the behaviour of organizational members. Decisions are made regarding goal setting, strategic planning, organizational design, personnel actions, and both individual and group activities. Apart from its organizational impact, decision making also has a strong individual effect. The quality of a decision directly influences a person’s professional success and overall satisfaction, making it important to study decision making from both perspectives.

Another key reason for studying decision making is to improve the quality of decisions we make. Often, our decisions are not as effective as we believe. Selective perception can bias the information we use, while our attitudes and values shape how we interpret that information. The tendency toward consistency can lead to oversimplified thinking. Additionally, people often take credit for positive outcomes and blame external factors for negative ones, which creates a distorted and favourable memory of past decisions. All these factors can weaken decision quality and limit our understanding of the decision-making process.

Many individuals are unaware of their own human limitations in decision making, as well as the methods that can improve their effectiveness. There is often very little formal training focused on decision making, either within or outside organizations. As a result, people rely heavily on experience. While experience can be helpful, it can also be misleading, as individuals may learn incorrect approaches or rely on irrelevant information when making decisions.

To improve effectiveness, it is essential to understand the decision-making process. Decision making is closely linked with planning, as it involves determining objectives, policies, programmes, and strategies. For teachers, one of the most important qualities for success is the ability to make sound decisions. Teachers often face situations where they must make quick decisions, while in other cases they have time for careful analysis, including gathering facts, evaluating alternatives, and selecting the best option.

Ultimately, decision making is a human process. When a teacher makes a decision, he or she selects a course of action that is believed to be the most appropriate and effective in a given situation.
