Origins in Ancient Greek Philosophy

  • The concepts of actuality (energeia or entelecheia) and potentiality (dynamis) were first systematically articulated by Aristotle in the 4th century BCE.

  • Aristotle introduced these notions in multiple works, especially the MetaphysicsPhysics, and On the Soul (De Anima).

  • Potentiality refers to the capacity or power of something to be in a different state or to do something it does not currently do.

  • Actuality refers to the realization or fulfillment of that capacity.
