Actuality and Potentiality
(Metaphysics)
CUET PG – Philosophy (Notes)

Origins in Ancient Greek Philosophy
The concepts of actuality (energeia or entelecheia) and potentiality (dynamis) were first systematically articulated by Aristotle in the 4th century BCE.
Aristotle introduced these notions in multiple works, especially the Metaphysics, Physics, and On the Soul (De Anima).
Potentiality refers to the capacity or power of something to be in a different state or to do something it does not currently do.
Actuality refers to the realization or fulfillment of that capacity.
