Chapter – 31

Elections under the Constitution of India

The Constitution of India provides for the procedure of elections to various constitutional offices and legislatures, balancing direct legislation by Parliament with constitutional principles.

Election of the President and Vice-President

  • President: The procedure for the election of the President is laid down in Article 54.

  • Vice-President: The procedure for the election of the Vice-President is laid down in Article 66.

  • Both offices follow proportional representation, unlike elections to the legislatures.
