Heat Budget of Earth

Climatology (UNIT 2)

Table of Contents

The earth absorbs some insolation (short waves) and radiates heat back into space via terrestrial radiation (longwave radiation). Through this give and take process simply called the heat budget of the atmosphere, the earth maintains a constant temperature.

Concept

  • heat budget is an exact balance between incoming heat collected by Earth and outgoing heat emitted as radiation.
  • If this balance is disrupted, the earth will get increasingly warmer or cooler as time passes.
  • In other words, it is the gain and loss of heat, as well as the balance of heat (received and emitted).
