  • The Madras coast was under the effective control of the Rayas of Chandragiri only until 1645-46.
  • Venkatapathi Maharaya (1586-1614) was the last effective ruler of the Hindu Empire.
  • After Venkatapathi’s death, a civil war broke out from 1615-1630, where Sriranga, his nephew, was imprisoned by rebellious feudatory rulers.
  • Eamadeva, Sriranga’s son, escaped imprisonment and was declared king by Yachama Nayak of Venkatagiri.
  • Yachama Nayak defeated Jagga Raya, the head of the disloyal chiefs, in the battle of Toppur near the Grand Anicut.
  • The Nayaks of Madura and Gingee sided with the rebels, while the ruler of Tanjore supported the rightful king.
