Table of Contents
  • India is a multicultural society with several tribal groups and diverse religions, making the institution of the familycomplex.
  • Families in India can be both patriarchal (authority flows from the father) and matriarchal (authority flows from the mother).
  • These family structures determine rules regarding lineage, descent, residence, inheritance, and incest.
  • Differences exist in the composition of families across various regions and groups.
  • Most portrayals of the Indian family reflect the ‘ideal Hindu family’, which may not represent the reality of modern Hindu families.
  • Such portrayals often fail to capture the family and marriage institutions of other groups in India, including Christians, Parsees, Muslims, and over 700 tribal groups across the Indian subcontinent.

MATRILINEAL FAMILIES IN INDIA

  • Matrilineal families are found in South India and the North-East.
  • The Khasis of Jayantia Hills and the Garos are prominent examples of matrilocal and matrilineal societies.
  • The Nayars of Malabar (Kerala) are known for polyandry (now declining) and matriliny.
  • The Kadars of Cochin also follow a matriarchal system.
  • The family system among the Khasis, Garos, and Nayars is briefly described in further detail.
