Teacher Education
- Teacher education refers to the systematic process of preparing teachers through education, professional training, practical experience and continuous professional development. It equips teachers with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and professional competencies required for effective classroom teaching, assessment, learner support and educational leadership.
- Teacher education is broader than simply learning how to teach a subject. It includes understanding child development, learning theories, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, classroom management, educational technology, inclusive education, professional ethics and the social responsibilities of teachers. It includes both pre-service education, undertaken before entering the profession, and in-service education, undertaken after becoming a teacher.
- In India, teacher education is closely associated with institutions and regulatory bodies such as the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and, in the field of special education, the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).
Nature of Teacher Education
- Dynamic and evolving: Teacher education changes with developments in society, technology, curriculum, educational policy and learners' needs. The increasing use of digital learning, artificial intelligence, inclusive education and competency-based education has expanded the responsibilities of teachers.
- Multidisciplinary: Teacher education draws knowledge from psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, economics, linguistics, education and subject-specific disciplines. Understanding learning requires knowledge of both the learner and the social context in which learning takes place.
- Professional in orientation: It aims to develop professional competencies rather than only theoretical knowledge. Teaching practice, internship, lesson planning, assessment and classroom management are important components.
- Value-laden: Teaching involves values related to equality, dignity, democracy, inclusion, social responsibility and ethical conduct. Teacher education therefore prepares teachers to work with learners from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
- Practical and reflective: Effective teacher preparation combines theoretical understanding with school-based experience. Reflection on one's own teaching helps teachers identify strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement.
Scope of Teacher Education
The scope of teacher education includes:
Pre-service and in-service teacher preparation.
Development of professional and pedagogical competencies.
Understanding child and adolescent development.
Curriculum planning and instructional design.
Classroom management.
Assessment and evaluation.
Educational technology and ICT integration.
Inclusive and special education.
Educational research and innovation.
Professional ethics and teacher identity.
Educational leadership and management.
Continuous professional development.
Types of Teacher Education Programmes
Teacher education is a continuous process rather than a one-time qualification. It can broadly be organised into pre-service programmes, in-service professional development and advanced or specialised programmes.
| Category | Major programmes | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-service | D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed, B.Ed, ITEP | Preparation before entering teaching |
| In-service | Induction, orientation, refresher courses, CPD | Professional development of working teachers |
| Advanced | M.Ed, Ph.D. | Research, teacher education and educational leadership |
| Specialised | B.Ed/M.Ed Special Education | Preparation for special and inclusive education |
Pre-Service Teacher Education Programmes
Pre-service programmes are undertaken by individuals before or at the beginning of their professional teaching careers. They provide theoretical knowledge, pedagogical training and practical school experience.
Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.)
- D.El.Ed. is a professional teacher education programme primarily designed for elementary-level teaching. The programme generally has a duration of two years.
- Its curriculum covers areas such as child development, elementary education, pedagogy, language education, mathematics teaching, environmental studies, foundational literacy and numeracy, assessment and school internship.
- DIETs, SCERTs and recognised teacher education institutions play important roles in elementary teacher preparation.
Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.)
- B.El.Ed. is a four-year integrated undergraduate teacher education programme, generally entered after Class 12. It combines professional education with disciplinary and liberal education.
- The programme includes child development, educational theory, subject knowledge, pedagogy, school experience and extended internship. It is particularly significant because teacher preparation begins alongside undergraduate academic study rather than being added as a separate professional qualification after graduation.
Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
B.Ed. is one of the major professional teacher education programmes in India. Under the NCTE Regulations, 2014, the standard B.Ed. programme has a duration of two years.
It generally includes:
Perspectives in education.
Understanding the learner.
Pedagogy of school subjects.
Knowledge and curriculum.
Assessment and evaluation.
Inclusive education.
Educational technology.
School internship and teaching practice.
B.Ed. prepares teachers for different levels of school education depending on recruitment rules, subject qualifications and the requirements of the concerned education system.
Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)
- The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) was introduced as an important reform under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is a four-year multidisciplinary teacher education programme entered after completion of secondary schooling.
- ITEP integrates disciplinary knowledge with professional teacher education. Depending on the programme, students may pursue combinations such as B.A. B.Ed., B.Sc. B.Ed. or B.Com. B.Ed.
- The programme gives greater emphasis to multidisciplinary learning, Indian knowledge traditions, pedagogy, school experience and practical training. NEP 2020 envisages the four-year integrated B.Ed. as an important minimum qualification for school teachers in the longer-term reform of teacher education.
B.Ed. Special Education
- B.Ed. Special Education is designed to prepare teachers to work with learners with disabilities and additional educational needs. Programmes may include specialisations related to areas such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
- Such programmes are regulated within the framework of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Training includes disability studies, assessment, instructional adaptations, assistive technology, inclusive education and specialised teaching strategies.
In-Service Teacher Education
In-service teacher education refers to professional learning undertaken by teachers after they enter the teaching profession. It helps teachers update their knowledge, improve classroom practices and respond to changes in curriculum, technology and educational policy.
Orientation and induction programmes are generally designed for newly appointed teachers. They introduce teachers to school procedures, classroom management, curriculum, assessment, professional responsibilities and contemporary educational reforms.
Refresher courses and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) help experienced teachers update their knowledge and skills. Workshops, seminars, online modules, peer learning, action research and professional learning communities may form part of CPD.
Major areas of contemporary teacher development include:
Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).
Competency-based education.
Inclusive education.
ICT and digital pedagogy.
Assessment reform.
Classroom management.
Experiential and activity-based learning.
NEP 2020-related reforms.
NISHTHA has been an important national initiative for large-scale teacher professional development. Digital platforms such as DIKSHA also provide teachers with access to online courses, teaching resources, training materials and professional learning opportunities.
Distance and Online Teacher Education
- Open and distance learning has expanded opportunities for professional development, particularly for teachers who are already employed.
- Institutions such as IGNOU, NIOS and state open universities have offered teacher education and professional development through distance or blended modes, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
- Online teacher development makes it possible for teachers to access lectures, digital resources, assessments, training modules and professional communities without always being physically present at a training institution.
Advanced and Specialised Teacher Education
- Master of Education (M.Ed.): M.Ed. is an advanced postgraduate programme in education. It develops expertise in areas such as educational research, curriculum studies, educational psychology, assessment, teacher education, educational policy and leadership. It can support careers involving teacher education, educational administration, research and academic work, subject to the eligibility requirements of particular institutions and posts.
- M.Ed. Special Education: M.Ed. Special Education provides advanced professional knowledge in special and inclusive education. It may include advanced study of disability, assessment, intervention, curriculum adaptation, assistive technology, research and inclusive educational practices. RCI regulations are relevant to recognised special education programmes.
- M.Phil. in Education: The M.Phil. was historically used as an advanced research degree in education and related disciplines. Following changes in higher education policy and doctoral education, the programme has been discontinued or phased out in many institutions.
- Ph.D. in Education: The Ph.D. is the major advanced research degree in education. It prepares scholars for research and academic careers and contributes to knowledge in areas such as educational psychology, curriculum, pedagogy, policy, teacher education, educational technology and educational administration.
