Polamüru Grant Basis for the Vişnukundin Chronology

  • The Polamūru grant provides important astronomical data that can be verified, allowing for a roughly accurate chronology of the Vişnukundin dynasty.

  • The Polamūru grant and another grant from Maharaja Jayasimha-vallabha I of the Eastern Calukya dynasty were discovered together at an ancient site in Polamūru, Ramachandrapuram taluk, East Godavari district.

  • This discovery, along with the charities recorded in both inscriptions, provides a synchronism that helps to fix the date of the Polamūru grant and the 48th year of Madhavavarman III.

  • The Vişnukundin Polamūru plates record the grant of the village Pulombūru (ancient name of Polamūru) as an agrahara to Śivas’arman (a Brahmacarin of the Taittiriya-sakha), son of Damasärman and grandson of Rudrasarman.

  • The donee, Śivas’arman, is described as a Caturvedin, one who mastered the four Vedas, and a resident of Kunduru in Karmarastra.

  • The grant was made during a moon eclipse in Phalguna, in the 48th year of Madhavavarman III’s reign.

  • The Eastern Calukya Polamūru grant records the re-grant of the same village as an agrahara to Rudras’arman of Gautama-götra, son of Śivas’arman and grandson of Damas’arman.

  • The donee in the Eastern Calukya grant is referred to as purvagraharika, meaning he was the former holder of the agrahara.

  • The Eastern Calukya grant is dated to the 7th day of the 8th fortnight of the hot season, in the 5th year of Jayasimhavallabha I‘s reign.

  • Jayasimhavallabha I‘s reign is proposed to have occurred between S. S. 568 and S. S. 595, corresponding to 641-673 A.D..

  • The Eastern Calukya Chronology places Jayasimhavallabha I‘s reign between 641-673 A.D., with the grant dated around 645 A.D..

  • The date of Jayasimhavallabha’s grant (645 A.D.) serves as a landmark for determining the date of the prior Vişnukundin grant, providing an approximate date for Madhavavarman III’s accession.
