  • The first two chapters prepare the foundation for the present one.
  • The first chapter outlined the general frame of reference of action, including the components and types of systems in which they are organized.
  • The second chapter expanded on the action features most relevant to the social system, analyzing the functional problems, prerequisites of social systems, and types of action-orientation in roles and institutions.
  • Now, the focus is on how these components are organized to form a social system.
  • The next step is analyzing the relational context of types of action-orientation relative to which actions must be institutionalized.
  • So far, action-orientation types have been discussed in the context of individual roles, not in differentiated reciprocal interaction systems.
  • The relational context involves understanding the combinations of these orientations in interaction systems.
  • After analyzing relational context, the next step is to focus on the points of reference differentiating objects. This includes differentiating their ascriptive quality-complexes and achievement pattern-types.
  • The following chapter will place these results into the functional problem-foci of the social system, classifying them as allocative and integrative problems.
  • These problems will be further differentiated to understand their impact on the system.
  • The analysis will then move to the constitution of a systematically differentiated role-structure adequate to a society’s functional requirements.
  • The starting point for this is the combination of values from the pattern variables put forward in the last main section of the previous chapter.
  • The primary pattern elements of role structure will be unevenly distributed across different parts of the social system.
  • These primary patterns will be related to adaptive structures, which bridge the gap between abstract formalism and the specific adjustment problems in particular situations within the social system.
  • The analysis will explore both the internal differentiation within a given social system and the range of variation between different social systems.
