Administration of Scheduled and Tribal Areas

Chapter – 20

Special Provisions for Administration of Scheduled and Tribal Areas

The Constitution of India makes special provisions for the administration of certain areas known as Scheduled Areas and Tribal Areas, due to the backwardness of the people living in these regions. These provisions are contained in Articles 244(1) and 244(2) along with the Fifth and Sixth Schedules of the Constitution.

  • Scheduled Areas in States other than Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram are administered under the Fifth Schedule.

  • Tribal Areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram are administered separately under the Sixth Schedule.

Fifth Schedule: Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes

The Fifth Schedule of the Constitution deals with the administration and control of Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes in States other than Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
