Origin and Members
- Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was formed in 1967 in Bangkok by five Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore.
- The primary purpose was political and security cooperation to counter threats from China and Japan.
- Initially, ASEAN focused on security concerns, but later evolved into a successful economic organization.
- For 17 years, ASEAN consisted of only the founding five members.
- From 1984, membership began expanding: Brunei joined as the sixth member.
- Vietnam joined in 1995, and Laos and Myanmar followed in 1997.
- Cambodia became the tenth member in 1999.
- The permanent Secretariat of ASEAN is located in Jakarta, Indonesia, and coordinates ASEAN activities globally.
