George Orwell: About the Author

• George Orwell was born on 25 June 1903 in Bihar, India. His father, Richard Walmseley Blair, named him Eric Arthur Blair, a name he later abandoned for his pen name. His childhood and school life at St. Cyprian’s were unhappy and lonely, though he won a scholarship to Eton.
• He later served in Burma as an assistant to the District Superintendent of Police before resigning and returning to England in 1927. He participated in the Spanish Civil War, an experience that deeply influenced his political views. To write Animal Farm, he resigned from The Tribune. With the publication of Animal Farm (1945), he achieved fame and financial success. His other major work, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), further established his reputation.
• Orwell died of tuberculosis in 1950 at the age of 46.
